Communities worry about proposal to cut ‘Meals on Wheels’ program

“If 48 percent of our budget is affected, you can see that would have a dramatic impact on the number of meals that we can provide here in Tarrant County”.

Volunteers go door to door helping people like David. Among those helping out were Lynchburg Police Chief Raul Diaz, Lynchburg City Councilman Randy Nelson and the Lynchburg Hillcats mascot, Southpaw.

Clark says there’s more to Meals on Wheels than the “Meals”.

Meals on Wheels provides food to millions of Americans in need. 23% of the budgeted cost for FeedMore’s program is reimbursed through local Areas Agencies on Aging, who receive funding from federal sources including Community Development Block grants and the Older Americans Act. “We are committed to continuing that mission regardless of challenges posed by potential cuts to federal funding”. Individual donations accounted for 50 percent of the Lynchburg organization’s fiscal year 2015-16 income, according to a fact sheet.

A Meals on Wheels program has been operating for almost a half-century in the Santa Maria Valley, and almost two decades in the Lompoc Valley.

Mick Mulvaney, director of the Office of Management and Budget, on Thursday said that Meals on Wheels, after-school programs and LIHEAP can not show that they deliver the promises made.

The problems that President Donald Trump’s proposed federal budget would cause for Chicago extend far beyond the Meals on Wheels program that so far has received most of the attention.

“We can’t spend money on programs just because they sound good”, Mulvaney said. She said the alliance is watching budget developments “very closely”. “We will always need support from both sides, especially as the demand for services continues to rise along with the senior population”.

Volunteers are preparing for cuts by asking the community to help now. Again that’s a state decision to fund that particular portion to it. They may even have fewer falls at home and less worry about being able to remain there.

And like you I am sure, I know our states and cities are not positioned to shore up the federal government and absolve them of their responsibility to preserve and protect our union, at all levels and for all peoples. There’s no evidence that Meals on Wheels is the most cost-effective program there is, or that it’s the most efficient use of our taxpayer dollars.

But Bertolette says “it’s hard to imagine a scenario in which these critical services would not be significantly and negatively impacted if [the budget proposal is] enacted into law”, she says. “We ask that they give some kind of contribution if they can, some give as little as $2”. In America, one in six senior citizens does not know where his or her next meal is coming from. “Federal funding is at risk”, says the homepage of the nonprofit’s website, “Help us defend these vital services today”.
